Urho Kekkonen National Park’s new exhibition takes you to a journey into the wilderness

Urho Kekkonen National Park Customer Service Kiehinen, in Saariselkä have a new exhibition. The exhibition is aimed at hikers, travellers, and everyone interested in the arctic nature. When visiting the Saariselkä area and Finland’s second largest national park, it is worth starting your hike from Kiehinen

A visit to the new exhibition at Kiehinen helps understand why this national park is so important to so many people. The gently sloping fells, beautiful river valleys, old-growth forests and sheltering wilderness huts – there’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

The Kiehinen exhibition can be the starting or finishing point for a hike in Urho Kekkonen National Park. The large wall map provides a good picture of the scope of this very large park and helps you plan which wilderness hut you want to stop at. After the hike, you can spend some time in Kiehinen reminiscing about the experience, and check if you were right about the species of a plant flowering by the trail or a bird seen racing along the fell top. The exhibition has a special place for Urho Kekkonen, the man who gave his name to the national park. Spend some time in the wilderness hut corner of the exhibition learning about some of the legendary people involved in this national park or browse through newspaper articles written about the area over the years.

The script for the exhibition was prepared by Planner Kristiina Aikio and Biologist Heini Koivuniemi from Parks and Wildlife Finland with assistance from a working group of personnel from the Northern Lapland Park area. Graphic design is by Recreational Amenity Specialist Pasi Nivasalo from Parks & Wildlife Finland. The exhibition is part of the Phenomena of Arctic Nature ENI project.

There is no entrance fee for Urho Kekkonen National Park Customer Service Kiehinen and its exhibitions. In June, Kiehinen moved to new premises in Saariselkä, and is now located on the ground floor of the Santa's Hotel Tunturi’s Gielas building.
