The Aurorapolku trail takes you
into the lap of nature safely and easily
Starting from near the centre of Saariselkä, the Aurorapolku trail takes you straight into the lap of nature in the Urho Kekkonen National Park. The trail is safe and easy for non-skiers. At 2.1 kilometres, the Aurorapolku trail is ideal for children, too.
When the skies are clear, you can admire the starry northern sky or marvel at the sight of the northern lights, or aurora borealis. The Aurora cottage, or Northern Lights cottage, is located along the trail. It provides shelter and an ideal vantage point for nature viewing when it’s cold and snowing.
The Aurorapolku trail begins from the starting gate of the Urho Kekkonen National Park in Saariselkä. You can recognise the gate by the signpost with the colourful northern lights.
The trail is circular, so it ends right where you started. You don’t have to worry about getting lost, as long as you follow the signposts along the route.
You can take the trail in winter, too. It takes at least one hour to go around the trail. The trail is not lighted, so you should bring a torch for when it gets dark.
The Aurora cottage is located about halfway down the trail, around 700 metres from the starting point. There are toilets and a campfire site in the cottage yard. Finnish hikers like to cook sausages on the campfire.
